Stubble field — Model Scene scenery growth

Stubble field is finished growth for building dioramas and display-case scenes from the Czech manufacturer Model Scene. It is not a kit and not a loose material you would have to put together laboriously — you get a worked area that faithfully imitates a field shortly after harvest. Sharp stubs of cut stems remain on it in straw-yellow to ocher shades, with trampled soil showing through between them.

What the vegetation looks like

The coloring matches high summer and early autumn, that is the time of harvest. The stems are low, dense and irregularly spread, so the area does not read as a regular carpet. That is exactly how finished growth differs from ordinary static grass sprinkled onto glue: it has natural thinned-out places as well as denser clumps and already carries the mixed color variety that otherwise has to be painted in.

Use in a diorama

A stubble field is a rewarding base for agricultural landscape, village scenes, country tracks and also for military dioramas from summer and autumn campaigns, where a vehicle drives across a harvested field. Glue the area onto a prepared substrate with PVA or thin white glue and press it down until the glue goes tacky. It is advisable to loosen the edges so that no visible edge forms, and to dust the transition into the surrounding terrain with pigments or fill it with tufts of taller grass and weeds. You will bring out the marks of wheels and tracks in a field by pressing it down lightly and adding dust pigment.
