The Sturmgeschütz III in the Ausf. G version was the most numerous variant of the whole family. During the war it turned from an infantry support gun into the main tank destroyer, and its low silhouette without a rotating turret, built on the chassis of a medium tank, was produced in numbers of over seven thousand. That is exactly why it appears in all the common scales and modelers run into the question of what to paint not only the camouflage with, but also what is visible through the open hatches.
The exterior is taken care of by Dunkelgelb to RAL 7028 in the mid-war variant, Rotbraun RAL 8012, Olivgrün RAL 6003, Schokobraun RAL 8017 and a creamy white. The interior and the details are covered by a satin black, a shade for rubber and tires, the dark gray RLM 66, old brass metals, the steel gray of the weapons, wood and a transparent green for the glass of the periscopes. This last group is what sets the package apart from ordinary camouflage collections.
The interior tones are laid on before the hull is joined to the superstructure, because after that you can no longer get inside. The exterior three-color camouflage is sprayed with soft transitions, but on vehicles from the end of the war the boundaries were often sharp, because the paint was applied with a brush right at the unit. The cream serves for tactical numbers and for winter overspray, which washed off the surface during the winter.
Late examples moreover carried Zimmerit paste against magnetic mines, which roughened the surface markedly and took saturation away from the paint on it. On a model it shows in that the same camouflage behaves differently on smooth and on textured areas, which is worth taking into account when spraying.
