Drying grass is a color hard to find in an ordinary modeling palette. It is neither green nor brown but lies between them, and without it terrain looks either like a fresh meadow or like lifeless soil. Grünbraun Gelbbraun RAL 8000 from the Italian maker Lifecolor is exactly that green-brown middle tone. The manufacturer gives the RAL designation in the name; both German names in the name refer to the same number.
It does the most work where two different surfaces meet on a diorama. On the edge of a dirt track, where the grass thins and the soil shows through, at the foot of a wall, on the verge of a rut. Here it is worth applying the shade so that the transition is not sharp, by fine stippling or with an almost dry brush that leaves both neighboring colors sensed underneath.
On straw and hay: a thatched roof, a bundle of hay on a cart, straw spread in a pen or on the bottom of a crate all have exactly this green-brown cast of a freshly dried stalk, not a pure yellow.
For builders of village, field and farm dioramas and for modelers whose scene lacks a natural transition between the vegetation and the ground.
Keep out of the reach of children and work in a well-ventilated room.
