About product

Signalbraun Matt RAL 8002 from Lifecolor

Fresh rust is a different color from old rust. It is lighter, warmer and far more prominent, because it has not yet had time to gather dust or to darken. The matte shade Signalbraun with the number RAL 8002 in its designation stands for this first stage of aging metal and works on a model wherever the damage is new.

Typical situations for fresh rust

  • A scrape where the paint has gone only recently and the metal has started to react.
  • A rust streak running down from a rivet, a bolt or a crack.
  • The edges of openings, cuts and shot holes, where the edge of the metal is exposed.
  • Untreated threads, chains, hooks and small ironwork.

Rust streaks without overdoing it

The effect of running rust is striking, but it is easy to overdo. The rule of three places is what works: a few really prominent streaks are enough on one model, and the rest only suggested. Every streak must have a source, that is a particular rivet, joint or damaged spot it comes from, and it must follow the direction in which water really runs over the surface. It is best to build the trace up in several light repetitions, so that it varies in strength along its length and is stronger at the top than at the bottom.

Who the color will serve

It suits modelers who want a legible timeline of damage on a model: light fresh rust in the places of a recent knock, darker tones where corrosion has been working longer. It also serves on its own on cargo, barrels, chains and the metal equipment of a diorama.

Keep out of the reach of children and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the packaging.

FAQ

When the eye can find no calm area. The streaks should be concentrated in a few places with a clear source; traces scattered evenly over the whole surface read as decoration rather than corrosion.

Yes, and that is the recommended approach. The dark tone low down as shadow and older corrosion, this lighter one above it only on the most exposed places. Layering gives rust a depth that one shade never will.

Always with the running water, that is from the top down and following the shape of the surface. Straight on a vertical face, down the slope on an inclined one, in an arc around an obstacle. A trace drawn against the fall is the most conspicuous mistake.
