The second green tone of Japanese naval camouflage, Imperial Japanese Navy Camo Green Type 2 from Lifecolor, makes it possible to build a pattern from several greens instead of a single one.
Responsibility details are not available.
The acrylic paint Imperial Japanese Navy Camo Green Type 2 stands in the naval part of the Lifecolor range beside the other camouflage greens, which the maker distinguishes by a type number. The meaning of that number is not apparent from the name and is not guessed at; what matters is that the range offers several green tones, and that in itself opens up a way of working that is not possible with a single green.
A camouflage built on a single green is readable: the field has the same brightness everywhere and the eye easily adds it up into one figure. As soon as a second green tone comes in, the field of the pattern starts to live a life of its own. Neighboring areas with a slightly different green behave differently in changing light, so the boundaries between them are lost at dusk or against the light and the outline is harder to take a bearing on. It also gives a modeler a tool for handling a large area without monotony.
Putting the pattern together
In practice it proves worthwhile to lay the pattern out in advance, at least roughly, and only then to apply it. First the basic naval gray, after it the larger green fields and finally the supplementary green tone in smaller areas, which bring irregularity into the pattern. The transitions are led softly and need not be equally pronounced everywhere. Under the top tone it is good to let the lower coat show through in places, because that is exactly what makes an area alive.
