Transitions, mists and shaded areas are a discipline where a shade with a pronounced character comes in useful. The acrylic Lifecolor Thunder Vibe belongs to this artistic part of the range.

The shade Thunder Vibe carries a name with no tie to a standard and is intended for free color work: for graphics, transitions and effect areas. In such work the paint is not used as a uniform finish but as one of the coats that show through one another and only together create the resulting tone.
A transition is made with patience, not with quantity of paint. Hold the airbrush farther from the area, apply only a very light trace and let the tone build up gradually. As soon as you try to get the richness in one pass, the edge of the transition hardens and can no longer be saved.
If you want to bound a transition, use a loose mask held a little above the surface. A soft edge arises that looks more alive than a sharp cut along a stencil laid flush.
In the engine part of a model a soft spray is used for dirtying. A dark tone led into the corners, around the exhaust flanges and under the joint faces will turn clean metal into a used machine. It is the same work as a graphic transition, only with a different intention.
