Leather Warm Shadow, a warm shadow on leather and straps

Leather behaves differently in shadow from canvas or hemp rope. Where a textile fiber disperses a shadow into gray, leather keeps a warm brown base even in its darkest place, because light is reflected from its surface softly and without a sharp break. Leather Warm Shadow from the Lifecolor acrylic range is a shadow tone tailored precisely to this material.

Where leather is on a model

On scale vehicles and on figures there is surprisingly much leather equipment: belts and straps, pouches and holsters, weapon slings, harness, boots, seats and gloves. It is precisely on these small parts that the shadow decides the result, because the shape itself is so small that without a grading of tone it merges into one area. The smaller the scale, the greater the difference a shadow makes: on a small figure it tends to be the only means of giving a belt and a holster shape.

A procedure that works

• The transition between a leather part and a canvas part of the equipment, where the two materials meet.
• Lay the basic leather tone down as an area and then lead Leather Warm Shadow only into the recesses, under buckles and to the edges of overlapping parts.
• On a strap watch the place where the belt touches what is under it; the darkest value belongs there.
• The bends on pouches and harness hold the shadow along the whole length of a fold, not in spots.
• The shade also suits as a warm transition between leather and dark textile surroundings.
