About product

YeHong No. 0 Brush - a detail brush (U-STAR)

A fine detail brush of size 0 from the YeHong range by the manufacturer U-STAR. It is a tool for small work, where an ordinary brush already carries too much paint and does not allow a precise touch.

What size 0 means

Brush numbering starts at the smallest sizes, and the rule is that the higher the number, the bigger the brush. Size 0 is therefore a small, detail brush, while a size twelve, say, is already a brush for areas. Watch out for markings with a fraction: formats such as 10/0 or 5/0 are finer still than 0. In practice size 0 is a sensible compromise: the point holds enough paint for the stroke not to dry out halfway, and it is still fine enough for real detail.

Use

  • Instrument panels, levers, cabling and small items in a cockpit.
  • The eyes and faces of figures, buttons, buckles, straps.
  • Outlining edges, bringing out detail and small highlights.
  • Touch-ups and repairs of small flaws after airbrushing.

With a detail brush the technique matters more than the brush itself. Brace your work, resting the edge of your palm on the table or against the model holder, and keep the stroke short, rather in two goes than in one long, uncertain stroke. Take up paint in small amounts and keep checking whether the tip still holds its point; as soon as it starts to splay, rinse it and shape it again. And count on a fine brush being a consumable tool: even with the best care the point wears down in time and has to be replaced.

Who it is for

For figure painters and modelers who finish details by hand with a brush. Thin the paint before work, as thick paint clogs the point and the brush loses its tip. Take the paint on the tip of the bristles only, not along their whole length.

Never dip the bristles as far as the ferrule, as paint dried at the root will ruin the brush and the point will splay beyond recovery. Wash it out immediately after painting: with water for acrylics, with the matching thinner for enamels and lacquers. After washing, shape the point and store the brush bristles upward. Never leave it resting on its bristles at the bottom of a jar of thinner.

FAQ

Small. Brush sizes are counted from the smallest upward, so the higher the number the bigger the brush, and zero is a detail size. If you come across a marking such as 10/0 or 5/0, those are brushes finer still than 0.

The manufacturer does not state the bristle material for this range. Whether it is natural hair or synthetic, the same care rules apply: do not soak it as far as the ferrule and wash it out right after work.

Most often because the paint is too thick, or because it is taken along the whole length of the bristles. Thin the paint and take it on the tip only. And wash the brush out at once, as paint that dries at the root of the bristles under the ferrule ruins a brush beyond recovery.

After washing, shape the point and stand the brush bristles upward, or lay it down so that the bristles rest against nothing. Never leave it standing in a jar of thinner, as the bristles bend and the point is gone for good.
