The American twin-engine fighter changed its clothes several times during its service and each time it was fundamental. It began in an overall light blue, which was meant to hide the machine against the sky, went on with a pair of grays, changed to the darker current pattern and in the strike version finally to a uniform dark gray. This lineup holds the shades of all four stages.
The oldest item is the light blue to FS35450, the overall tone of the first machines of the A and B versions. Next comes the pair of ghost gray, the darker one to FS36320 and the lighter one to FS36375, which the aircraft carried in the middle part of their service, beginning with a particular production machine. The current pattern rests on the darker gray to FS36176 complemented by the shade to FS36251.
The choice of shade always matched where combat was expected. The light blue aimed at a high-altitude fight against the sky, the ghost gray came about as a compromise for the view from above and from below, and today's darker tones match the fact that the machine operates over terrain more often. Anyone building several versions side by side gets a clear demonstration of this change from one lineup.
A practical note on building: the two pairs of grays differ only slightly from one another and on a small model they will merge if the boundary between them is not accentuated. It therefore pays to apply the lighter tone only after the darker one has dried and to keep the transition sharper than the one you see on a photograph of the real machine.
