A plaque 25 mm in size with the badge of the 1st Armored Division of the United States Army, whose nickname Old Ironsides is given directly in the name. It is not a model nor a part of one, but a diorama accessory that gives a finished scene a nameplate. It comes into its own on the front of a base, on the plinth under a single vehicle and on a shared strip with which a collector labels a whole display case. The size of 25 mm is the smaller of the pair of sizes.
The 1st Armored Division of the US Army was raised in 1940 and received the nickname Old Ironsides after the famous frigate. As the first American armored formation it went into action in North Africa, where it went through the hard experience of Tunisia, including the fighting for the Kasserine Pass. It then moved to Italy, took part in the fighting at Anzio and in the advance on Rome and stayed on the Italian front until the end of the war. Its badge with a triangular field is among the most recognizable American divisional symbols.
A label is meant to be legible at first glance, so place it on the axis of the base and leave a clear margin around it. Degrease the surface before painting and cover it in thin layers; the sharp edges of the relief can then simply be gone over with a dry brush. Protect the finished plaque with matte or semi-matte varnish, so that the raised parts are not worn away by rubbing. On a wooden plinth the plaque holds better when the ground has been sanded and leveled beforehand.
