Four standard shades of the American camouflage for Southeast Asia: two greens, a sand brown and a light gray.

From the mid-1960s onward United States combat aircraft were given the pattern known as the Southeast Asia camouflage. Two greens and one sand brown made up an irregular pattern on top, completed underneath by a light gray. The pattern came about as an answer to operating low over vegetation and was carried by a whole generation of the machines of that war.
The four bottles match the standard tones FS 34079, FS 34102, FS 30219 and FS 36622. With this set you can build the F-4 Phantom II, the F-105 Thunderchief, the A-1 Skyraider, the A-7 Corsair II, the O-2 observation aircraft and the C-130 transport. On some machines the light underside was later abandoned and the pattern carried over the whole surface, which is a rewarding variant for a model.
The same four shades were used by other countries that took over American equipment, so the use of the set reaches far beyond one conflict. It also serves for helicopters and for the ground equipment of air bases.
The paints rest on an acrylic binder and work best in an airbrush. The two greens are fairly close to each other in this pattern, so once they are dry it is worth separating them by lightening the centers of the areas slightly and picking the panel lines out in a darker tone.
Prominent black codes on the vertical tail and an asymmetrical division of the pattern, which differed slightly from one machine to the next, belong to this scheme as well. That is exactly why it pays to draw the boundaries freehand or over a rolled length of modeling putty rather than over straight adhesive tape, whose result looks too technical. A period photograph of the particular machine is more useful here than any general drawing of the pattern.
