The history of Marine Corps helicopters reads in paint as a succession of several eras. Until 1955 the oldest machines wore gloss Dark Sea Blue to the ANA 623 standard, the same tone as the carrier aircraft of the day. Between 1955 and 1957 it was replaced by the transitional Light Gull Grey ANA 620, which later returned on the heavy CH-53D Sea Stallion.
From 1956 until the middle of the 1980s the AH-1, UH-1, CH-46 and CH-53 machines were ruled by green Field Green ANA 627. In the years 1986 to 1991 it was joined by a green, gray and black pattern with Medium Grey FS35237 and Night Black FS37038. Today's Tactical Paint Scheme is built on Light Ghost Grey FS36375, to which Dark Ghost Grey FS36320 is added on the MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor. The last tone, USMC Sand, matches the coat with which machines were repainted in the field during Operation Desert Storm.
Being in the Orange Line means a nitrocellulose binder. A thin coat hardens quickly and takes masking tape sooner than a water-based acrylic, but it has to be worked with good ventilation and with respiratory protection.
The span of eight tones makes it possible to build several machines from different periods without having to buy anything else.
The change from the green to the gray era happened gradually, and in the middle of the 1980s both forms flew side by side. For the display case that means two machines of the same type can be built looking entirely different, without either of them being inaccurate.
On the real machines the sand coat of Desert Storm was applied in haste over the existing finish, so uneven coverage looks more convincing on a model than a perfectly smooth spray.
