US OLIVE DRAB MODULATION SET

A set for modulating American olive drab

A set of four acrylic paints from the third generation of the manufacturer range, each in a bottle holding seventeen milliliters. The shades follow on from one another from shadow through the base tone to light, so they can be used to build up modulation, the technique in which the individual areas of a vehicle are sprayed in slightly different tones. Even under a single-color finish the model then gains volume and stops looking flat.

Use

• Modulating large areas of Allied vehicles in American olive drab.
• Shading the lower parts and the areas in shadow.
• Highlighting the upper surfaces, hatches and edges that catch the light.
• Mixing transitional tones, because the shades are mixable with one another.

Work tips

Start with the darkest tone over the whole area and lay the lighter ones on gradually toward the inside of the individual panels, not across the edges. Spray at low pressure and from a short distance; the transitions should be gradual. Stir the paint thoroughly beforehand, as the pigment settles when it stands. At the end tie the whole thing together with a very thin coat of the base tone, which takes away any excess of variety. Seal the surface with a gloss coat before the decals.

Modulation works best when it is discreet. The difference between the darkest and the lightest tone should be sensed rather than obvious on a finished model.
