In an earth palette white has a special position. It is seldom applied on its own, but it is the starting point every time another tone is meant to be lighter, dustier or more faded. A drop into umber turns fresh soil into a dried-out field boundary, a drop into gray turns a wet rock into limestone baked by the sun.
The second use is dry. A brush with the hair almost wiped out is drawn over the edges of a rock casting and the white stays only on the raised places, where in reality the wind would have dried it. A dusting of snow on ridges and traces of lime on a stone wall are made the same way.
The binder is water based, the stain is thinned with water and a dried application stays washable, so it can be removed or weakened when a shade comes out too raw. The preparation is non-toxic and suits plaster, wood and foam compounds. The bottle holds 4 fluid ounces, that is 118 milliliters.
Before the work it is good to shake the bottle and to try the shade on an offcut of the same material. Plaster draws differently than wood and the same thinning gives a different result on the two bases. Heavily thinned white will finally serve to unify the whole, because it levels out the differences between castings from different batches of plaster.
