About product

Tamiya X-4 Blue (Enamel) - Gloss Enamel Paint, 10 ml

A 10 ml bottle of the modeling paint Tamiya Color Enamel in the shade X-4 Blue - a pure, all-round primary blue with a gloss finish (at Tamiya the letter X without an F denotes gloss). This is the paint as such, not a kit or the parts of a model.

Enamel versus acrylic

You will find the same shade number X-4 at Tamiya in an acrylic version as well. Although they are called the same, these are two different products with different chemistry. This paint is an enamel, that is synthetic and solvent-based, and water will not thin it. The correct thinner is X-20. Thinner X-20A is acrylic and is not intended for this enamel; the difference is a single letter, but in practice it means an entirely different solvent. If you need a water-thinnable paint, order the acrylic version of X-4.

What enamels can do

  • They dry to a smooth, hard and mechanically resistant film with very good adhesion.
  • Thanks to their slower drying they flow out splendidly, so a coat applied by brush levels itself and no pronounced brush marks stay in it.
  • They are the traditional medium for washes and for highlighting panel lines applied over cured acrylic, because an enamel will not dissolve an acrylic base and the excess can be wiped away cleanly.

Use

  • Civil vehicles - car bodywork, construction and utility machines, where a neutral blue fits.
  • Accessories and details - instruments, tanks, lettered areas, small components.
  • Naval elements - colored bands, gear and details on ship models.
  • Airbrush and brush alike - for spraying, thin the paint with X-20 (the maker states roughly 2 parts thinner to 10 parts paint) and spray in thin coats.
  • A base under decals - a gloss surface helps to keep decals from silvering.

Who the paint is for

For modelers who want a durable gloss finish and comfortable painting by hand, and for those who make washes with an enamel over an acrylic base. Stir the paint properly before use, because the pigment settles at the bottom.

A solvent-based enamel paint. Flammable. The vapors irritate the airways, so make sure the space is well ventilated and use respiratory protection. Store out of the reach of children and away from an open flame.

FAQ

With the Tamiya X-20 enamel thinner. It cannot be thinned with water, and the acrylic thinner X-20A is not intended for it either, because that belongs to the acrylic paints.

This variant is an enamel, that is a synthetic solvent-based paint. Tamiya also makes X-4 as an acrylic, which is a different product with different chemistry, thinned with X-20A. When ordering, watch which version you are buying.

Yes. Over properly cured acrylic an enamel is commonly used, among other things for washes and for highlighting panel lines, because enamel thinner will not disturb the acrylic layer beneath it.

Gloss - Tamiya marks gloss shades X and matte ones XF. A gloss film is at the same time a good base for decals.
