The dominant feature of a scene

A range of 17.7 to 20.3 cm puts these two pieces among the largest finished trees used in model scenery at all. A tree of this size stops being a backdrop and becomes the axis of the composition: it decides where the viewer looks first and at the same time shades part of the area beneath it. On a small base a single piece can take the place of a whole group of smaller ones.

The workmanship

The foliage is green, applied in an irregular texture, so the branching shows between the leaves. At these heights the trunk reaches a noticeable thickness and its lower part takes even a pronounced lean without breaking. The branching is set higher than on the low trees, which matches a mature specimen that stretched for the light in its youth.

Seating

The package holds 2 pieces. With tall trees it makes sense to reckon with the center of gravity: the pin alone in a shallow hole may not be enough, so drilling deeper and filling the hole with glue is recommended. The removable plate under the pin will serve while the composition is being tried out, and on a finished scene it can be taken off and the tree seated for good.

The real dimensions

On a layout in 1:87 a tree like this matches a height of roughly fifteen to seventeen and a half meters, and in 1:72 about thirteen to fourteen meters. In 1:35 it works out at six to seven meters, so a tree taller than a single-story building but not yet a giant. In every case it is the largest greenery a scene will carry without losing its distance from the buildings. A small base the size of a postcard will hardly carry such a tree; it makes sense only where it has open space around it.
