About product

Panhard 178 late version in 1:100 scale from Zebranomodel

A kit of the French armored car Panhard 178 in its late production form, in 1:100 scale. Zebranomodel runs the individual versions of this vehicle separately, so alongside it you will also find the early version and further variants with different turrets. The 1:100 scale is the domain of collectors of extensive collections, small dioramas and tabletop gaming groups.

The real subject

The Panhard 178 was a French four-wheeled armored car developed in the second half of the 1930s for reconnaissance in support of mechanized units. In a rotating turret it carried an antiarmor gun supplemented by a machine gun, which for an armored car of its day made it a fairly strongly armed machine. On hard roads it was fast and had a decent range, but off road the wheeled chassis limited it. The vehicles were committed to action in 1940 and a number of them saw further service in an altered form.

Building and painting tips

Assemble the chassis with the wheels and paint it before you fit the hull and the turret. Cut the small parts off leaving a margin and clean them up away from the sprue, otherwise they easily fly off. For injection-molded plastic, thin modeling cement applied in drops is enough; with resin parts wash them free of release agent first and glue them with cyanoacrylate. Leave the gun barrel to the end of the build. Lay the base on thinly and spray the paint well thinned at low pressure, so that the hatches and vision ports stay legible. Keep the weathering sparing and concentrate it on the wheels and the lower edges.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of French 1940 equipment in 1:100 scale
  • Modelers who build the early and late versions side by side
  • Builders of small dioramas and tabletop gaming groups
  • Anyone interested in armored cars of the interwar era

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The maker runs both versions as separate items under distinct designations for the early and late production form.

The Panhard 178 carried an antiarmor gun supplemented by a machine gun in a rotating turret.

The number of parts and the contents of the package are stated on the packaging.

The build is undemanding, but the parts are very small in 1:100 scale. Tweezers, a sharp scalpel and good light help.
