About product

Zebranomodel 1:100 Type 97 Shinhoto Chi-Ha with radio

A kit of the Japanese medium tank in 1:100 scale. This scale is smaller than that of the usual display models and is used mainly where several vehicles have to be built side by side, that is, for large dioramas and for tabletop wargames. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

The Type 97 Chi-Ha was the main Japanese medium tank of the Second World War. The Shinhoto designation refers to the later form with a new, roomier turret into which a more powerful gun with better anti-armor qualities than the original short weapon would fit. The vehicle had an air-cooled diesel engine and suspension with characteristic bell cranks, thanks to which its running gear has a different rhythm at first glance from European designs. The addition in the name refers to the form equipped with a radio. Radio equipment is an easily recognizable feature on Japanese tanks, because it typically comes with a pronounced antenna led around the turret. In the result this variant differs from the base form mainly in that detail, which in a diorama helps distinguish a command vehicle from the rest.

Building and painting tips

In 1:100 scale the parts are small, so work over a surface from which nothing will be lost and use tweezers. Cut the sprue gates with a sharp knife rather than twisting them. Spray the model in the base color before you glue the finest details on. Choose a shade rather lighter than you would use in a larger scale, because a small model darkens optically when viewed from a distance. Picking out the shapes does most of the work: a dark wash into the recesses and fine dry-brushing of the edges. Paint the antenna around the turret carefully; it is the most fragile place on the model.

Who the model is for

  • players of tabletop wargames in 1:100 scale
  • builders of large dioramas with a larger number of vehicles
  • collectors of Japanese armored equipment
  • modelers who want to tell a command machine from the ordinary ones

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
