A model of a work of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications in 1:1000 scale from the Czech maker ROP o.s. The subject is the artillery casemate R-H-S 79 Na mytine, one of the two main surface works of the Hanicka artillery fortress in the Orlicke Mountains. In this scale a work tens of meters long fits into a few centimeters, so the model captures above all the overall shape of the casemate, its stepping and the way it is set into the slope.
The Hanicka fortress lies northeast of Rokytnice in the Orlicke Mountains and belongs to the system of heavy fortifications that Czechoslovakia was building in the second half of the 1930s. It consists of six surface works linked by an underground system, but construction was not finished by the fall of 1938. The Na mytine casemate was concreted in November 1937 and is by far the most massive of the surface works of the fortress - it used up more concrete than any of the others. It was to carry the main artillery armament of the fortress and to support the neighboring sectors of the defense with its fire.
A model in such a small scale does not rest on a large number of parts but on a clean surface and a convincing setting in the terrain. Sand the surfaces gently before painting, take off the flash and fill any gaps. Concrete is best captured by a light gray base, over which a dark wash brings out the joints and the shadows, and a dry brush with a lighter shade then picks out the edges. Darken the embrasures, entrances and recesses so that they do not look flat. Complete the surrounding terrain with a fine scatter and low static grass - in 1:1000 scale very fine materials are enough, a coarse scatter gives the scale away immediately.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and terrain materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
