A model of a structure of the Czechoslovak heavy fortifications in 1:1000 scale from the Czech maker ROP o.s. The real subject is the entrance structure R-H-S 79a U silnice, meaning by the road, of the Hanicka artillery fort in the Orlicke Mountains. From the point of view of building a fort, an entrance structure is a special type — it was not a combat casemate but the gate to the underground through which materiel, ammunition and the garrison were brought in. The model captures its overall shape and the way it sits in the terrain.
The Hanicka fort is part of the system of heavy fortifications that Czechoslovakia built in the second half of the 1930s in the northeast of the country. It consists of six surface structures connected by underground works, but construction was not completed by the autumn of 1938. The U silnice structure was concreted at the turn of April and May 1938, as the last of the surface structures of the fort. Entrance structures were built in the rear, protected from direct fire, and their interior consisted of ramps and stores leading on to the underground halls.
A model in such a small scale does not rest on a large number of parts but on a clean surface and a convincing setting in the terrain. Sand the surfaces lightly before painting, knock back the burrs and fill the seams. A light gray base captures a concrete surface, a dark wash over it brings out the seams and the shadows, and dry brushing then picks out the edges. Darken the entrance and the gateway so that the openings do not look flat. The structure comes into its own when you add a stretch of access road to it — it is precisely the road leading up to it that tells an entrance structure apart from a combat casemate at a glance.
The model is supplied unpainted. Paints, glue, a base and terrain materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
