Injection-molded plastic kit of the Beriev Be-12 amphibian antisubmarine aircraft in 1:144 scale from Eastern Express. Besides the plastic sprues the package holds a photo-etched fret and a decal sheet. The small scale makes the model a welcome addition to a collection, because an aircraft with a large boat-type hull takes up considerably less space in a display case than it would in the usual aircraft scales.
The Be-12 is a Soviet amphibian aircraft with a boat-shaped hull, a cranked gull wing and a pair of turboprop engines mounted high above the water so that spray reaches them as little as possible. It served mainly for patrolling over the sea and for hunting submarines, and thanks to its amphibian design it could operate from the water as well as from an airfield. The aircraft stayed in service unusually long and was also used in coastal rescue and patrol roles.
In 1:144 scale it pays to spend time on the seams of the hull, because the smooth boat bottom gives away every unevenness. Dry-fit the parts, fill the seams and sand them with fine paper. Glue the photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Mask the canopy glazing precisely and use a canopy glue so that the clear part does not fog. Start painting with a primer. The underside tends to be light and the upper surfaces darker, and the transition should be kept soft. Apply the decals over a gloss base and unify the surface with a satin or matte varnish to taste. Keep the weathering subtle, because heavy weathering looks unconvincing in small scale.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
