About product

1:144 Boeing 767-300 – masking stencils for spraying

This set from the manufacturer SX-Art holds self-adhesive stencils for spraying the color scheme on a model of the Boeing 767-300 airliner in 1:144 scale. The use is straightforward: the stencil defines the shape, the surroundings are covered and the paint is applied with an airbrush. This product has nothing to do with masking the flight deck glazing.

The real subject

The Boeing 767-300 is the stretched version of the twin-engine wide-body airliner with two aisles in the cabin, intended for medium and long-haul routes. Compared with the shorter baseline version it has a longer fuselage, but otherwise keeps the same wing and overall layout. It was also built in freighter and combi form, and some of the aircraft still fly in cargo service today.

Keeping the line continuous across the joints

On an airliner most of the work is not the spraying itself but getting the dividing line to continue smoothly across the seam of the fuselage halves, across the wing root and around the doors. So glue the fuselage first, fill the seam and sand it — only a finished surface is worth applying a stencil to. Spray the light base shade first and let it mature; while masking it is easy to lean on fresh paint and press the texture of the film into it. Press the stencil down above all where it runs over an engraved line or over the outline of a door, because an engraving works as a channel through which paint flows. Spray perpendicular, thinly and preferably twice. Remove it once the paint has set, check the edge against the light and correct any bleed before the final clear coat.

Who the set is for

  • builders of civil aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • modelers who want a continuous dividing line along the whole fuselage
  • airbrush users looking for a sharp edge without tape
  • those who prefer spraying to large-area decals

This is a building accessory, not a model. Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

An engraving under the film works as a channel. In those places the stencil has to be pressed home with a toothpick and the paint sprayed really thinly.

The fuselage yes, including filling and sanding the seam. Otherwise the dividing line will not line up at the seam and the repair is then difficult.

The set is intended for spraying the color scheme, not for covering the glazing. The manufacturer gives the extent of the stencils in the package on the packaging.
