Brengun 1:144 Marston Mattings is perforated steel matting for building the surface of a field airfield in 1:144 scale. It is a diorama element, not a kit of an aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set from the Czech maker Brengun represents the perforated steel matting with which the surfaces of provisional airfields were strengthened during the Second World War and after it. The result is not a model of an aircraft but the ground on which your models then stand. For a diorama builder it is one of the most typical elements of an aviation scene of all.
The perforated steel panels were joined by hooks along their sides into a continuous carpet that could be laid on practically any terrain and turned into a usable runway or parking area within a few days. The matting was used on all the main fronts, from the Pacific islands to western Europe, and its characteristic round holes are recognizable at once. It lasted long after the war too, and not only at airfields but as an improvised hard surface in the field.
It is best to prepare the surface before you stand anything on it. Level the ground, lay the matting down and only then deal with the edges: it looks most natural when the area does not end in a straight edge but passes gradually into grass and mud, which reach over it in places. It pays to paint from a dark base, over which a gray or steel shade is lightly sprayed, so that the holes stay dark and the surface gains depth. Rust is applied in this scale only as small patches, mainly at the edges and in the places where water would stand. Finally we recommend a light touch of dust in the tracks left by machines taxiing.
The set is supplied unpainted. Glue, paints, a base and models are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
