About product

A paper display base for a model 7.3 x 7.3 cm, pierced planking motif (Peewit)

A printed paper base for a model measuring 7.3 x 7.3 centimeters with the motif of pierced steel planking, that is, the demountable taxiing surface with which field airstrips were made firm during the Second World War. The drawing is prepared for 1:144 scale. It is not a diorama kit nor a plastic board, but a flat underlay on which you stand a model for display or photography. For small aircraft in 1:144 scale it is the quickest way to get a model off a bare shelf and onto a convincing surface.

What the base is for

A model with no underlay looks like a sample in a display case; a model on the surface of a field airstrip looks like a scene. A paper base takes up practically no room, it can be swapped easily and, unlike a built diorama, anyone can manage it in a few minutes. It also serves well as a background for photographing finished models, because the drawing adds scale to a shot and removes the reflection of a glossy table.

Usage tips

We recommend backing the paper with thin card or a board of foam material, otherwise it curls at the corners. Attach it with a layer of thin glue spread evenly over the whole area, not in spots, so that the surface does not wrinkle. Trim the edges with a sharp knife along a ruler only once it has dried. The color of the print can be fine-tuned with a light hint of dust pigments or very thinly thinned paint, so that the grass between the planks stops looking flat. At the end you can spray the surface with flat clear from a can, which protects the print against abrasion and evens the gloss out with the model. Do not glue the model down for good; a drop of adhesive wax is enough.

Who the base is for

  • modelers building aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • everyone who wants to photograph models on a convincing underlay
  • collectors who have no room in a display case for a built diorama
  • a quick improvement to displayed models with no building work

The model and glue are not included in the package. This is a printed paper base.

FAQ

These are demountable perforated steel plates with which the taxiing and takeoff surfaces of field airstrips were made firm during the Second World War. They interlocked and could be laid quickly even on soft ground.

It is printed paper. We recommend backing it with card or a board of foam material, so that it does not curl.

The drawing is prepared for 1:144 scale. In larger scales the size of the planks would be obviously small.

Yes. A light hint of pigments or very thinly thinned paint will benefit the print; once it is finished, protect it with flat clear from a can.
