A detail set cast from resin, intended to replace the engine nacelles on a model of the Boeing 747-200 in 1:144 scale. It is not a model of the aircraft but an accessory to one: the parts are fitted to the mountings under the wing and take the place of the shape-simplified nacelles from the original plastic kit.
The RB211 is a three-shaft turbofan engine, that is a design in which the fan, the intermediate-pressure and the high-pressure stage each have a shaft of their own. The -524 family is its more powerful branch and the letter designation distinguishes the particular power rating with which the second generation of the Jumbo was engined. It is precisely the choice of engine that is the main guide in choosing for the four-engine 747: the aircraft was delivered with three different makes of powerplant and each had a differently shaped nacelle and mounting. A set with British engines therefore will not fit a machine that flew with an American powerplant, even though it is the same type of aircraft. Four nacelles hang ahead of the leading edge of the wing on pylons and their outline is among the first features by which the versions of the 747 are told apart.
The castings are held on pour blocks, which are cut away with a saw or a cutting disc, never with plastic nippers, which crack the brittle material. Before gluing, wash the parts in warm water with dish soap, so that residue of the mold release agent is removed; otherwise neither paint nor the joint will hold. Resin does not react to modeling cement for plastic; only super glue will join it reliably. It sands more easily than plastic, but a fine dust arises that must not be inhaled, so work with a respirator or sand under running water.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
