About product

A photo-etched set for the Westland Wessex HAS.1 and HAS.31A in 1:144 scale

A set of photo-etched metal parts for a model of the Westland Wessex naval helicopter in the HAS.1 and HAS.31A versions, in 1:144 scale. It is cut for one particular kit, the Mark I Models one. It is not a model or a kit; it is an accessory bought to go with a base model.

The real subject

The Westland Wessex is a British helicopter derived from the American Sikorsky H-34 design, in which the original piston engine was replaced by a turboshaft. That changed the layout of the nose and the distribution of mass and turned the original machine into what was practically a new type. The HAS.1 version served with the Fleet Air Arm in the anti-submarine role, while the closely related HAS.31A was delivered to the Royal Australian Navy.

Why photo-etched parts pay off on helicopters

A helicopter has incomparably more thin structural features than an aircraft of comparable size: steps, handholds, covers, intake grilles, door hinges, landing gear braces. An injection mold makes them all too thick, because otherwise the plastic would not reach into the mold. Etched sheet has a thickness in hundredths of a millimeter and removes that contradiction. The procedure is straightforward: cut the original plastic part off with a scalpel and sand the area flat, and only then glue the photo-etched part on. It is bonded with super glue; on a curved fuselage a minute drop is applied and the part is held with tweezers until it sets. Shape long thin parts lightly to the curve of the fuselage beforehand, as forcing the bend in place straightens them back. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and apply a primer.

Who the set is for

  • builders of helicopter models in 1:144 scale
  • modelers who dislike thick plastic features on a small model
  • more experienced builders used to cutting and gluing photo-etched parts
  • anyone interested in British naval aviation subjects

This is an accessory to a model, not a kit. The helicopter model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory set of photo-etched parts. You need to have, or buy separately, a Wessex kit in 1:144 scale.

According to the product name, the HAS.1 and HAS.31A versions. For other Wessex versions Brengun lists a separate set.

On the features that the photo-etched parts replace, yes. Cut the original part off with a scalpel and sand the area flat, otherwise the new part will not sit properly.

Shape the part lightly to the curve of the fuselage beforehand, apply a minute drop of super glue and hold it with tweezers until the glue sets.
