About product

Tail mud flaps for the Tiger I Ausf. E 1:16 (Aber)

The photo-etched set replaces the tail mud flaps, that is the hinged flaps at the rear of the hull, on a model of the Tiger I Ausf. E tank in 1:16 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle but an accessory for a model you already have. The treatment matches the form used in the Tunisian campaign by the 501st Heavy Tank Battalion. Aber is a Polish manufacturer that has long focused on precise photo-etched and metal parts for large scales.

Why change the mud flaps

Mud flaps are among the parts that never look right in plastic. In reality they were thin sheet metal, but on a model in 1:16 scale the molding has to be thick enough to be produced at all and not to break. The result is a part that looks disproportionately massive on a large model. Photo-etched metal solves that mismatch: the thickness matches the scale, the edges stay sharp and the part can also be bent into a hinged-up or damaged position, which is practically impossible with plastic. The rear is, moreover, a clearly visible part of this vehicle that nobody overlooks when the model is displayed.

Tips for working it

Cut the parts out of the frame with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, and never break them out. Make the folds in a bender or between two blades, always in one plane and in one go; repeated bending tires the metal and the part cracks. It is glued with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount, and on larger areas two-part epoxy can be used, which gives you time to position it. Degrease the metal before painting and use a primer for metal. If you want to show the mud flap bent or torn off, shape it carefully over a rounded object and gently sand the edges after the damage, so that they do not look like a sharp cut. Then match the paint on the flaps to the hull and add the corresponding dustiness.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Tiger I models in 1:16 scale
  • Modelers who want to swap coarse plastic parts for ones that are correct to scale
  • Anyone interested in building the particular Tunisian configuration of the vehicle
  • Experienced modelers with experience of photo-etched parts

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are only the photo-etched tail mud flaps as an accessory for a Tiger I model in 1:16 scale. The base kit has to be obtained separately.

Working with photo-etch calls for a scalpel, a bender or at least two blades, and super glue. In the large 1:16 scale the parts are bigger and easier to hold than in 1:35, so it makes a suitable start.

Compatibility with a particular kit is not stated here. The set is intended for models of the Tiger I Ausf. E in 1:16 scale, and before buying we recommend comparing the shape of the rear of your model.
