It carries motifs of present-day flags of the United States, which are cut out of the sheet and used in a scene as a separate element, typically on a staff, on a pole, fixed to a vehicle or hung on a wall.
A flag is visible from both sides, so it looks best glued up from two mirrored parts with a thin aluminum or copper foil inserted between them. The foil ensures that the flag keeps the shape it has been formed into and at the same time hides the paper's translucency. Weight the glued parts down until they are completely dry, so that the edges do not open up, and only then trim to the final shape; a cut through both layers at once gives a clean edge.
Waving makes a flag come alive. Fold the glued part over a blunt object and form a soft wave matching the direction of the wind in the scene; sharp creases look unnatural. A flag without wind, on the contrary, should hang along the staff. The staff can be made from steel wire or from a needle, and the attachment is then enough to suggest with a thin strip of paper or a drop of glue. In a display case scene, mind that the shape of the flag does not cross the main silhouette of the model.
Use PVA or matte glue in a thin even layer and wipe any excess off at once. Once dry, spray with a weak matte clear coat, which suppresses the sheen of the printing and strengthens the edges. The patina should be restrained with a flag: a mild dusting with pigment and fine shading of the folds are enough, while a bold wash would needlessly dirty the colors.
It is a printed paper accessory. Glue, paints, clear coats, wire and foil are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
