The sheet from ETA diorama is a printed paper surface with the pattern of a present-day sidewalk. It is not a kit and not a decal – the printed paper is glued onto a baseboard and creates the walking surface of a scene. The name states three scales at once, so the sheet is offered as usable in several sizes; always check, though, that the size of the paving slab goes with the figures you are building the scene with. The floor is precisely what decides whether a scene looks settled in or whether the models are merely standing on a board.
The undercoat has to be perfectly flat – on a horizontal surface every bump shows more than on a wall. Sand the board over, dust it off and apply the glue to both sides of the joint. Lay the sheet down from one edge and press the air out with a plastic card. Before you start gluing, plan the pattern out according to the future viewpoint: the lines of the joints should run along the axis of the scene, because a tilted grid tells the viewer at once that the floor is only a printed sheet. Add a curb of plastic profile at the edge of the sidewalk – paper on a vertical edge is not enough on its own.
Over the curb or over the edge of the base, draw the paper on in one piece and dampen it lightly at the bend. Go over the cut edges with the gray of the joints. Walking surfaces get dirty naturally: a dark wash drawn into the printed joints adds depth, dry pigment along the walls and in the corners suggests drifted dust, and light wearing through in the middle of the sidewalk shows where people walk. Matte clear coat is essential at the end – unprotected printing rubs off during further work on the scene and wears through exactly where it shows most.
