A detail part in 1:24 scale from the Polish brand Yamamoto Model Parts. It represents a sports fuel tank of the kind racing and competition cars have placed in the trunk instead of the production tank. It is an accessory to a car model, not a kit of a vehicle.
On a car with a stripped interior an open trunk is one of the most rewarding places on a model: the viewer sees bare sheet metal, the cage and precisely the tank with its lines. A production kit mostly deals with that space with a flat floor, so a tank is the only way to turn a trunk into a scene. It comes into its own just as well on a circuit car, a rally special or a drift car with the rear stripped out.
The tank is a large surface with no breaks in it, so every unevenness shows on it. After washing and cutting the casting remains off, sand the surface over with progressively finer grits and use a filler primer, which will fill the fine pores. Do the aluminum look in thin coats, because metallic paint laid on all at once goes grainy. More convincing than an even coat is a slightly uneven surface: once it has dried, go over the surface with a soft cloth with a little graphite or steel pigment in the direction of one stroke, which makes the impression of brushed metal. Set the straps and the mounts apart in matte black or dark gray. Do not seat the tank tightly into the model: leave a few tenths of a millimeter of clearance around it, so that it can be put in without rubbing the paint once the trunk is painted, and add the connection to the parts around it with thin tubing. It is that tubing which is the detail that visually ties the tank to the rest of the car and removes the impression of an object inserted on its own.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without a kit of the vehicle. Glue, paints and further parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
