A palm is a typical orienting element of a scene: it places a diorama in a warm zone at once, whether it is a seaside setting, a desert settlement or a tropical base. In the large 1:24 scale it also works as a vertical compositional axis — it breaks up the horizontal plane of the base and gives the viewer a scale against the vehicles and figures. Use the detail of the trunk length of 105 mm when planning the height of the scene and the depth to which you sink the trunk.
Wash the parts before painting and let them dry, and level any parting seams with a file and fine abrasive paper. Glue the trunk and the leaves according to the material with super glue; on larger joints a glue with a filler helps. Do not paint the trunk a single brown: lay the base lighter and pick the shadows between the individual rings out with a dark wash, then bring the tops out with a dry brush. The foliage looks livelier if you shade the individual leaves from a rich green at the trunk to a lighter, yellowish green at the tips, and let a few dry leaves hang down. Anchor the trunk into the base with a pin, so that the palm does not depend on surface gluing alone.
