Injection-molded plastic kit of the racing Toyota Celica 1600GT in the form it took for the Japanese endurance event at the Suzuka circuit in 1972. 1:24 is the most common scale for car models, so the model sits well in a collection of circuit and production cars alike. The box holds plastic parts and a decal sheet with the racing markings. The manufacturer is the Japanese firm Hasegawa, which has long kept classic Japanese cars of the 1970s in its program.
The first-generation Toyota Celica appeared at the start of the 1970s as a sports coupe with rear-wheel drive. The 1600GT was the sharpest variant in the range: it was powered by a 1600 cc inline four with twin overhead camshafts, an engine derived from the brand's competition practice of the day. A light body, a short wheelbase and a lively engine made the Celica a favorite of Japanese circuit racing, where in competition trim it appeared on wider wheels, with flared fenders and added aerodynamics. The endurance races at Suzuka were among the high points of the domestic season at the time.
On a circuit car the clean paintwork and the accurate placement of the decals are what matter. Spray the body over a primer in thin coats, let it cure properly and lay down a gloss clear coat; only then put the sponsor decals on the gloss and settle them with a decal softener so that they follow the edges of the fenders. Finish the interior with its roll cage and bucket seat before closing up the body. Set the wheels and tires apart with a flatter shade so that they look realistic against the glossy body.
