About product

Valerie - a 1:24 figure from Master Box

This is an injection-molded plastic figure in 1:24 scale from the fantasy series of Master Box, which follows loosely on from the story of the crew of a spaceship. It is not a kit of a vehicle or of an aircraft; what the package holds is a figure subject meant to be assembled and painted. The series comes out character by character, so it can be put together step by step and a shared scene built from the parts of it.

The subject

Besides historical figures, Master Box has long been developing its own science fiction lines of its own authorship with strongly drawn character. The figures in this line are not anonymous soldiers but particular characters with an expression, clothing and props of their own. That is precisely the main theme during the build: the worth of such a figure stands or falls on how well the face comes out and how the materials of the clothing and the equipment are set apart.

Building and painting tips

For a figure, 1:24 is a fairly generous scale and it forgives fewer mistakes than the small scales, because every transition of color shows. Sand the parting lines and the sprue nubs down carefully, or they will draw through the paint. Put a primer under the assembled figure and only then build the shades up. Build the flesh from a mid-tone layer through the shadows and the highlights, not from the extremes. Paint the eyes with a very fine brush and rather before you finish the flesh around them, so that they can be put right. A matte varnish at the end will even the surface out and hold the unwanted gloss of acrylic down.

Who the figure is for

  • For modelers who want to practice figure painting in a larger scale
  • For collectors of science fiction subjects of a maker's own authorship
  • For builders of scenes and dioramas looking for a striking main character
  • For more advanced beginners - there are few parts, but the painting decides the result

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is supplied as an injection-molded plastic casting to be assembled and painted; paints and glue are not in the package.

The number of parts and the number of figures are given on the packaging. The series comes out as individual characters that can be joined into a shared scene.

The assembly yes, there are few parts. The painting is the demanding part; the face and the transitions on the fabrics will decide the result, so it pays to have the basic techniques tried out.

The most usual choice is acrylics for figures, which layer and mix well. We recommend putting a primer underneath and evening the surface out with a matte varnish at the end.
