This Aviattic decal sheet covers the tail surfaces of the Fokker D.VII of licensed OAW production with a five-color lozenge pattern and fills it out with pink rib tapes of dyed fabric. The combination of a fine five-color drawing with salmon pink tapes is among the most striking documented forms of German coverings. The print on a clear backing carries the structure of the cloth and the final intensity of the pattern is governed by the color of the base, from factory-fresh to service-worn.
The Fokker D.VII, introduced in the spring of 1918, was rated the best German fighter of its day and was built under license at OAW as well. The covering of printed lozenge fabric was filled out with tapes overlaying the ribs and the seams; their material and color differed with the maker and the batch, from strips cut from lozenge through natural linen to dyed blue and pink tapes. It is precisely these small things that let modelers capture a particular documented machine faithfully today.
Once the pattern and the tapes are settled, let everything dry thoroughly and close the surface with clear; a matte finish suppresses the sheen of the decal and brings it closer to the character of fabric. If you want to liven the covering up, work only on the clear coated surface: a fine filter evens the tone out and a thinned wash brings out the tapes and the texture. Go easy with the weathering, because fabric coverings got dirty less than sheet metal.
