About product

Eduard 1:32 Curtiss P-40E Kittyhawk TFace - double-sided masks

A set of self-adhesive die-cut masks from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for 1:32 scale. The TFace designation means that the package holds two matching sets of shapes: one for the outer side of the glazing and one for the inner side. That is what distinguishes it from the basic mask for the same aircraft, which deals only with the outside. The set is neither a kit nor a finished model - it is used when painting the plastic P-40E model in the large scale.

What masking from both sides is for

On the real aircraft the canopy frames are painted in the cockpit color inside and in camouflage outside. When only the outside is masked, the frame looks like transparent plastic when seen from below or into an open cockpit. TFace makes it possible to capture that difference: first you spray the inner side in the interior color, then you swap the mask for the outer one and move on to the camouflage. In 1:32 scale the cockpit is large and an open canopy is a common build option, so the difference really does show.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40E is a single-engine fighter with a liquid-cooled Allison V12 engine, the V-1710, and a radiator under the nose. In British and Allied nomenclature the E version was known as the Kittyhawk. The canopy glazing has several flat segments separated by prominent frames, which is exactly the case where masking by hand with tape takes a lot of time.

Usage tips

Apply and spray the inner masks before you glue the canopy to the fuselage. Degrease the glazing first, move the masks with tweezers and press the edges down with a toothpick. Apply the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat likes to bleed under the mask and in this scale every flaw is visible. Take the mask off shortly after drying, pulling it at a shallow angle along the surface.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the P-40E in 1:32 scale with an open cockpit
  • Builders who are bothered by frames painted on one side only
  • Anyone after a realistic look to the glazing without cutting tape by hand
  • More experienced modelers working with an airbrush

This is an accessory for a kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It additionally contains shapes for the inner side of the glazing. The frames can therefore be colored in the cockpit shade inside and in camouflage outside, which a single-sided mask cannot do.

It is not. This is a masking accessory for the plastic P-40E model in 1:32 scale. The model has to be obtained separately.

Before the canopy is glued to the fuselage. Once the cockpit is closed up you can hardly reach the inner side of the clear parts.

The gain is smaller, but the frame is visible from inside even through a closed canopy. For a closed build the basic single-sided mask is enough.
