A plastic kit from the Dora Wings brand captures the French Dewoitine D.510 fighter in the export standard designated by the letter J, and that in the fairly large 1:32 scale. A large scale has its charm on a prewar monoplane with fixed landing gear: in it the details of the cockpit, the exhausts and the fixed gear fairings come out well. The brand also makes related types of the Dewoitine line in the same size, so the model fits well into a themed collection.
The Dewoitine D.510 was a single-seat high-wing fighter with wing struts and fixed landing gear, which arose by developing the older D.500 and D.501 line. It was powered by a Hispano-Suiza V engine, and the design allowed for a cannon mounted between the cylinders of the engine and firing through the hollow propeller shaft — an unusual and effective solution for its time. The metal structure and the open pilot's cockpit are typical of the middle of the 1930s, when the machine arose. Besides French units the D.510 also reached several foreign users, to which various export designations correspond.
Kits of this type tend to be laid out as short-run, so reckon with more careful cleaning up of the parts and with a dry test assembly before gluing. Build the fixed landing gear and the wing struts to a template or a jig, so that the model does not stand crooked — that is the most common mistake on a high-wing machine with struts. Metal surfaces of the 1930s look good on a smooth, well prepared base; apply a gloss clear coat before the decals. In this scale it pays to add the bracing wires, the rigging and the fine control linkage with thin wire or filament.
