This set from the Greek manufacturer GasPatch models reproduces the antenna array of the FuG 202 airborne radar in 1:32 scale. It is not a model of an aircraft or a part of one but a separate technical detail that is fitted onto the nose of a finished model. It is exactly the antenna rods that are among the most conspicuous and at the same time the hardest to reproduce features of night fighters, because the mold forces injection-molded plastic to make them disproportionately thick.
The FuG 202 was a German airborne radar for night fighting used during the Second World War. It worked with non-directional radiation from several dipole antennas placed on the nose of the aircraft; the characteristic branched structure carrying the dipoles gave the whole thing a period nickname taken from a stag's antlers. The system served to guide the crew onto the target in the last phase of the approach, when ground control was no longer enough. The drawback was the aerodynamic drag of the antennas, which reduced the speed of the aircraft.
The antenna rods are the most fragile part of the set, so separate them at the very end and work with tweezers. Wash and degrease the parts before gluing; resin holds only with cyanoacrylate glue. Mark the exact position on the nose in pencil in advance or use a simple paper template, so that the array sits symmetrically and square. A brush can manage the painting: a thin layer of primer, a dark shade and only very slight accenting of the edges. Once the antennas are fitted, the model can be picked up only by the fuselage or the wing.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and unassembled. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
