About product

The cross with straight arms

The Balkenkreuz is an emblem known to everyone who has ever built a German aircraft from the period of the Second World War. It is a simplified, geometrically cleaned-up form of the older Iron Cross: the arms are straight, equally wide and bordered with a light, usually white edge. It was precisely that edge which made the emblem legible even on a dark camouflage finish.

A common symbol of three branches

The emblem was not the preserve of the air force. In the course of the war it was used in the same form by the ground forces, the air force and the navy, so it appeared on the fuselages of aircraft, on the sides of armored vehicles and on ships. This set is, however, dimensionally tuned to fighters, namely to the individual versions of the Bf 109.

What was left of it

The design did not disappear. Today's German armed forces carry an emblem that took over from the Balkenkreuz the four lighter fields around the edge of the arms, but the outline of the arms follows the widened shape of the original Iron Cross. In this the modern emblem differs from the wartime form at first glance.

Why size matters

National insignia were not drawn on aircraft in a uniform size. The dimension depended on the area it was applied to, so the cross on the fuselage of a fighter was considerably smaller than the same emblem on the fuselage of a twin-engine bomber. The subjects in this set are drawn in proportions matching a single-seat fighter, which is clearly noticeable when building in 1:32 scale. The set will therefore not suit a larger airframe and it is better to reach for another one.

What the delivery includes

The package consists of a printed sheet from which the individual emblems are released after soaking. The aircraft model and the paints are not supplied with it, and the 1:32 scale is binding.

FAQ

Only with reservations. The insignia are drawn in dimensions matching fighters of the 109 line. On a larger machine, say a bomber, they will look small.

The present-day emblem took over the four lighter fields around the edge, but the outline of the arms copies the widened shape of the Iron Cross. The wartime form has straight, evenly wide arms.

The supplier does not set out the numbers or the positions of the individual emblems. Check the specific make-up of the sheet before buying, therefore.

It is recommended. On a smooth gloss surface the transfer holds better and no silvering forms around it. The procedure does, however, depend on the paint you use.
