A resin figure from the Aerobonus line made by the Czech producer Aires. It represents a pilot of the Luftwaffe from the period of the Second World War in flying kit complemented by an inflatable life vest. The casting is supplied unpainted and before use it is assembled from several parts. The large 1:32 scale allows the folds of the fabric, the straps and the features of the face to be rendered in enough detail for the figure to stand up to a close look in a display case beside a finished model.
A life vest was a compulsory part of the kit of pilots operating over the sea or close to it. It was an inflatable collar vest worn over the flight suit and under the parachute harness, which kept an airman who had been shot down or had ditched afloat until rescue arrived. The rest of the kit consisted of a flight suit, a flying helmet with goggles, gloves and high boots; the form differed by season and by theater. A figure placed beside a model aircraft shows a viewer the real dimensions of the machine at once and turns a static model into a scene.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water because of the remains of the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and level the surfaces with abrasive paper used wet, and protect your airways when sanding resin. Try the fit of the arms and the head dry until you find a natural stance, then fill the seams. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Start the painting with a primer; build the skin from a base tone through shadows to highlights, and on the vest and the flight suit use glazes and a dry brush, so that the folds and the seams stand out.
The figure is supplied unpainted and unassembled, and it is an accessory to a model. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
