About product

Brengun 1:32 MQ-8B Fire Scout

A kit of the MQ-8B Fire Scout unmanned helicopter in 1:32 scale from the Czech manufacturer Brengun. It is a model of the whole machine in its own right, not an accessory set. The 1:32 scale is an advantage with so small an aircraft — the rotor head, the landing gear and the sensor turret are large enough in it to be worked up in detail, and the finished model still takes no more room than a fighter in 1:72. Brengun has the Fire Scout in further scales as well, so collectors can build a comparative pair.

The real subject

The MQ-8B Fire Scout is an American unmanned helicopter developed for the Navy. In design it is based on the light piloted helicopter Schweizer 333, whose pilot's cabin was replaced with onboard electronics and a control system. It is used for reconnaissance, surveillance and relaying target data, and takes off and lands from the decks of smaller surface ships. Characteristic features are the four-blade main rotor, the fixed skid landing gear and the stabilized sensor turret under the forward fuselage. The later Fire Scout type is already based on a larger airframe and looks different, so watch the version designation when looking for reference photographs.

Building and painting tips

A model of this size lives and dies by the rotor and the landing gear. Glue the main rotor blades on at the very end, so that they are not broken off while handling, and check the rotor head dry while the parts can still be moved. It is a good idea to leave the thin skids glued in position on a flat board, so that the model stands level once dry. Painting: a thin primer, then the base shade with an airbrush and a clear gloss coat under the decals. Mask the glazing of the sensor turret beforehand. With an unmanned machine, discreet weathering earns its place — a fine panel wash in the scribed lines and light lightening of the surfaces are enough; exaggerated grime looks out of place on a small model.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in modern unmanned aircraft and shipboard machines
  • Modelers who want a large scale without large demands on display case room
  • Builders who will appreciate an unconventional subject beyond the usual fighters and tanks
  • More advanced modelers used to short-run kits and careful dry fitting

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a kit of the whole machine in its own right. You need no other base model with it.

The material is not stated here. If the parts are cast in resin, wash them free of mold release agent before gluing and join them with super glue.

The MQ-8B is based on the Schweizer 333 airframe, the later type on a larger helicopter. They differ in shape, so look for documentation specifically for the B version.

They are not. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and the chemicals and paints have to be bought separately.
