A sheet 1:32 for two American Mustangs of the 356th and 357th Fighter Groups, both with striking personal inscriptions on the nose.
Responsibility details are not available.
The year 1945 was for the American fighter units in England a period of long escort flights and ever bolder attacks on airfields. Pilots had the names of girlfriends, joking inscriptions and whole pictures painted on their machines, and the command tolerated it, because it strengthened the bonds within the crews. It is exactly such personal markings that make up the content of this sheet, which concentrates on two different groups operating from airfields in eastern England.
The first aircraft, with the serial number 44-15052, carried the code PI-J and the name Lullaby for a Dream. It was piloted by Lieutenant James Hickey of the 360th Squadron, which belonged to the 356th Fighter Group based at the Martlesham Heath airfield, and the record places it in 1945. The second subject is the machine with the number 44-63195, the code G4-K and the name Marymae, assigned to Lieutenant Richard Potter of the 362nd Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group. Besides the names, the sheet also contains national insignia, serial numbers and large code letters in the matching size.
The inscriptions on the nose are finely printed and will not take rough handling, so they are carried on a soft brush and seated on a gloss surface. Once dry, the whole model can be gone over with semi-gloss clear coat, which evens the edges of the film out with the surface. It is advisable to work in stages and to let each side of the fuselage dry before the model is turned, because a freshly laid inscription can be shifted by even a light touch. The package contains only the sheet; the kit and the paints are bought separately.
