Masking set for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb in 1:32 scale. It contains films for the sliding cockpit cover from both faces, two sets of national insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The fifth variant of the Spitfire was built in the greatest numbers and the letter b after the numeral denotes the armament: two 20 mm cannon supplemented by four machine guns. It was these machines that bore the main weight of the fighting over the Channel, flew from dusty Malta airfields with a bulky filter under the nose and, in desert guise, got as far as North Africa. Anyone building a Spitfire in a large scale usually reaches for this version first.
The cockpit has a low windscreen with a flat armored transparency, a sliding cover often with a side bulge for a better view, and triangular glazing of the fixed section behind the pilot. The frames are narrow, which when outlining by hand means the brush has to hit a fraction of a millimeter. Film removes that uncertainty entirely, because the edge of the mask runs exactly where the molded frame ends.
British roundels went through several forms during the war, from broad color rings to the subdued version in just two shades. A sprayed roundel lets the shades be chosen to match a particular machine, whereas a decal is always as it was printed. Lift the film shortly after the paint is applied and wipe any adhesive residue off with alcohol.
