About product

Aerobonus 1:32 US Navy and US Marines pilot with an ejection seat for the AV-8B Harrier II

A resin figure from the Aerobonus brand, made by the Czech firm Aires, in 1:32 scale. It represents a pilot of the US Navy and the Marine Corps in modern flight gear and is complemented by an ejection seat shaped for the cockpit of the AV-8B Harrier II attack aircraft. The combination of figure and seat is practical: in plastic kits the seat tends to be simplified and, once the figure is seated, it would not be fully visible anyway, so the resin replacement handles both parts at once and in one style of detail. The figure is supplied unpainted.

The real subject

The AV-8B Harrier II is a single-seat attack aircraft with vertical and short takeoff capability, which came about as a deeply reworked version of the British Harrier, and in American service it was used above all by the Marine Corps. Vectored thrust made operation from short strips and from the decks of amphibious assault ships possible, which set the type's role as close air support. A Harrier pilot wears the standard gear of tactical aviation, that is, a g-suit, a survival vest and a helmet with an oxygen mask. The detail of that gear is exactly what is clearly legible on a figure in 1:32 scale.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings and remove the casting blocks with a saw; on figures they are usually on the underside of the feet and on the back. Before gluing the figure into the model, dry-fit it, because the Harrier's cockpit is narrow and a few tenths of a millimeter decide. Paint with acrylics in layers: first the base, then the highlighted surfaces and finally a dark wash into the folds. Build the skin from a darker tone to lighter ones, paint the eyes as finely as possible and rather from a distance. Finish the straps, the buckles and the oxygen hose at the end; they are exactly what gives the figure credibility. Complete the ejection seat with warning stripes and placards if a decal sheet is available.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of the AV-8B Harrier II in 1:32 scale
  • Modelers who want a credible figure in the cockpit instead of an empty seat
  • Anyone interested in a better seat than a plastic kit offers
  • Those who are not afraid of painting a figure with a brush

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. It is an accessory, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, the product name states it directly. The seat is shaped for the cockpit of the Harrier II in 1:32 scale.

It is not. It is supplied as an unpainted resin casting intended to be assembled and painted by the modeler.

The pose is shaped for a particular cockpit, so that is not guaranteed. It can be seated in another type only with modifications and after a dry fit.
