About product

Gneisenau 1940 - a photo-etched set in 1:700 scale (Flyhawk)

This is a set of photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet, intended for detailing a plastic model of the German battleship Gneisenau in her 1940 state in 1:700 scale. It is not a model of the ship and not a complete kit - the set will build nothing on its own and it assumes you already have the base plastic model. The exact extent of the frets and the list of parts are given on the packaging of the set.

What photo-etched parts are for

Injection-molded plastic has technological limits. Railings, ladders, gratings, antennas, platforms or crane structures cannot be molded from it at a realistic thickness, so on a plastic model they always look heavier than they should. A photo-etched part is tenths of a millimeter thick and seen from the side it practically disappears, exactly as reality dictates. It is precisely in the small 1:700 scale that the difference between a plastic and a photo-etched superstructure is visible at first glance and lifts the overall impression of a finished ship the most.

Tips for working with photo-etched parts

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch shears on a firm support, and never tear them out of the fret - the remains of the tab then cannot be sanded away. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edge is crisp and straight. Degrease the metal before gluing; neither glue nor paint holds on grease from your fingers. It is glued with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount, best on the point of a pin, and with larger assemblies a two-part epoxy adhesive helps, as it gives time to position them. Harder parts can be annealed over a flame before bending, which softens the material. Begin the painting with a base coat intended for metal, otherwise the finish rubs off.

Who the set is for

  • Ship modelers building a battleship in 1:700 scale
  • More experienced builders who have already worked with bending and gluing photo-etch
  • Builders of display models judged from close up
  • Those who want to replace coarse plastic railings, ladders and gratings

The set contains photo-etched parts only. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is an accessory. The package contains only photo-etched metal parts intended for detailing a plastic model of the Gneisenau in 1:700 scale. The base kit has to be bought separately.

Most often with super glue applied in the smallest possible amount. With larger and more loaded assemblies a two-part epoxy adhesive is useful, because it gives time to position a part. Ordinary plastic cement does not hold on metal.

Yes. Degrease the metal and apply a base coat intended for metal. Without a base the paint rubs off smooth photo-etch during handling.

Working with photo-etch in 1:700 scale calls for patience, a sharp tool and a steady hand. For a first experience of photo-etch it is better to start on a simpler set with larger parts.
