The real subject

The 85 mm 2A62 gun is the main weapon of the Soviet 2S14 Zhalo-S self-propelled antitank system. It is a slender barrel with a pronounced muzzle end, which on a model makes up the most conspicuous feature of the whole vehicle, and that is why every inaccuracy of shape and the slightest bend shows on it.

What the set offers

The set holds a turned barrel in 1:35 scale, that is a replacement for the barrel from a kit. A turned part has an exactly circular cross-section along its whole length, a smooth surface and a bore at the muzzle that on a plastic part has to be laboriously drilled. A plastic barrel is moreover often made up of two halves, and the seam after gluing has to be sanded down, by which the fine shapes are lost; with a replacement part this work falls away and the model gains in credibility.

Fitting it to the model

Cut the original plastic barrel off according to the kit instructions and clean the opening in the mantlet up so that the new part slips into it without play. Try the fit dry and watch that the barrel points straight ahead, as a deviation is visible from every angle on a finished model. It is glued with super glue, which should be applied in a small amount so that it does not run onto the surrounding surfaces. Wash and degrease the part before painting and apply a base coat, or the covering layer will not hold on the smooth surface.
