Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet BMD-2 airborne fighting vehicle in 1:35 scale. The set is not a kit or an extra part — its task is to mark out the border between the rubber tire band and the rim of the wheel. The masks are cut for the kit from Panda Hobby. Sets are made for a particular kit, so do not transfer them to another kit without a dry trial, even if it is a vehicle of the same family.
The BMD-2 derives from the same airborne chassis as the earlier BMD-1, and the main differences between them lie above, in the armament and the turret, not in the running gear. That stays light and low: five small road wheels on each side, return rollers, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front, plus hydropneumatic suspension with a variable ride height. Because of the requirement to be dropped from an aircraft and to be buoyant, the whole assembly is small and slight. On the model that means a short and narrow rubber circumference on every wheel — an area where painting by hand practically cannot be done in a way that gets ten wheels to come out the same.
The most typical mistake on wheels this small is the mismatch between the width of the brush and the width of the tire band: the paint gets over the edge onto the rim and the wheel thickens optically. The second mistake is masking a wheel that has not yet been cleared of casting remnants and the mold seam — the mask then fails to seat and paint bleeds precisely where the surface is uneven. Before you stick the mask down, go over the circumference of the wheel with fine abrasive paper and degrease the surface. The third mistake is leaving the masking until the end of the build: once the running gear is finished and seated, there is little room between the wheels and the rollers and the inner faces are out of reach entirely. The best order is to paint the loose wheels, lift the mask off while the paint has flashed off, and only then assemble the running gear.
This is a masking aid, not a model. Neither paints nor the kit are included in the package. Go by the details on the box for the contents of the sheet.
