A masking accessory for painting road wheels, not a kit. The set gives the boundary between the rubber tire and the disk a ready-made shape, so you do not have to cut rings nor draw around with a brush.
The set is cut for the wheels of the BT-7 kit from Zvezda. We point that out expressly, because a mask of the same vehicle for the kit of another brand exists as well – both sets are named the same and differ exactly only in the target kit. On a vehicle with large road wheels the diameter plays an especially great role, so a mix-up is noticed at once.
A mask must not go onto a bare nor onto a freshly sprayed surface. The right order is: clean and degrease the part, lay down a thin base coat, let it cure fully, spray the first of the two colors and let it cure again. Only onto a surface dried this way is the mask put in place.
The reason is twofold. On bare glossy plastic paint holds much worse than on primer and when the mask is peeled it comes away in whole islands. And on insufficiently dried paint a mask leaves an imprint of the margin or takes the finish with it. Curing moreover does not mean that the paint is not tacky to the touch – with most paints it is sensible to wait longer than necessary, especially when masking across the whole perimeter of a wheel. It also helps when the base under the mask is rather smooth than roughened: on a smooth surface the margin of a mask seats more tightly and the edge comes out sharper. Heavily matte paints with a coarse pigment therefore work worse under a mask; if you are painting with them, seal the surface with a thin layer of clear and mask only over that.
It is a masking accessory for modelers. The package holds neither a kit, wheels nor paints. Store the sheet flat and out of direct sunlight.
