This is a decal set, not a model of the aircraft. Stencils are the small technical markings that cover the surface of every real aircraft: warning texts around the engine intakes and the ejection seat, the marking of access panels, filler points and places for ground handling. It is these details that make the difference between a model that looks like a toy and a model that looks like a machine in miniature. The set is intended for the F-35A, that is for one particular version, because the layout of the markings differs from version to version.

The real subject

The Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II is the conventional version of the fifth-generation multirole fighter, intended for normal takeoff and landing from a runway. It is powered by a single Pratt & Whitney F135 engine and is the only one of the three versions to carry an internal cannon. Low observability places demands on the surface as well: on real aircraft the markings are deliberately low in contrast, often only in a shade close to the color of the skin, so that on a model they read as faint traces rather than as bold labels. It is worth matching the final weathering to that during the build.

How the decals are used

Apply the decals to a smooth gloss or semi-gloss base, otherwise a milky white veil appears under the film. Cut the decal out as close to the motif as possible, soak it, slide it into place and blot the excess water away. On engraved lines and rivets a decal softener helps, as it draws the decal into the relief. Once dry, even the surface out with a matte or satin clear according to the character of the subject.
