A supplementary decal set for a model of the CH-47A Chinook transport helicopter in 1:35 scale. According to the name it is cut for the Trumpeter kit, so the dimensions and shapes of the markings allow for its parts. Exactly what the sheet holds is given in the manufacturer's instructions; a list of the markings is not stated here.

The real subject

The Chinook is an American heavy transport helicopter, recognizable at first glance: it has two main rotors one behind the other turning in opposite directions, so the machine needs no tail rotor. Inside runs a continuous cargo cabin ending at the rear in a folding ramp, through which both supplies and equipment are loaded. The A version was the first production version and proved itself in Vietnam carrying loads, supplying isolated positions and recovering damaged machines. Power came from a pair of turboshaft engines.

Before you start applying them

• check in the instructions whether the markings are self-adhesive; a soaked self-adhesive film is ruined, whereas an unsoaked waterslide decal can still be saved
• cover the surface under the decal with a gloss clear coat, because silvering forms easily on a matte surface
• work with tweezers and a soft brush, as fingers will distort the marking
• leave a seated marking undisturbed to dry thoroughly and only then coat it with clear

Who the set is for

For a builder who has a part-built model of the Chinook in the A version and wants to give it a look beyond what was in the box. The work is quick but cannot be rushed: every marking is seated one at a time and once dry it will not move again. It pays to start from a less conspicuous spot and get a feel for how the markings behave.
