A turned dummy barrel for the German Pz.Beob.Wg.V Panther Ausf. D observation tank in 1:35 scale from Aber. The metal part represents the dummy gun that observation vehicles carried.
Responsibility details are not available.
A turned metal part in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Aber. It does not represent a combat barrel but a dummy, that is a mock gun of the kind carried by converted artillery observation vehicles on the Panther chassis in the Ausf. D version. This is a detail accessory for a plastic kit, not a model of the vehicle. The metal part has the correct profile with no parting line and a smooth surface, which shows up more on a dummy than on an ordinary barrel.
The Panzerbeobachtungswagen was a category of observation vehicles for artillery observers, in which the original gun armament was taken out of the hull and the space freed up was filled with signals and observation equipment. So that the vehicle would not look unarmed from a distance and become a priority target, a fixed dummy barrel was fitted in the mantlet. The actual defensive armament was a machine gun in a separate mounting. The version on the Panther chassis stayed in small numbers and is therefore sought after by modelers.
Cut off the plastic part and adjust the hole in the mantlet to the diameter of the metal pin. Check the correct angle dry, as a dummy barrel is usually fixed and does not move. Degrease the metal, glue it with cyanoacrylate glue and apply a primer for metal surfaces. Because a dummy was never fired, do not put soot or firing marks on the muzzle, or you will create a detail that makes no historical sense. It is better to keep it the same color as the vehicle and add light weathering.
This is a detail set, not a complete model. Glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.
